Yes i have a question for you I am the caretaker out at bald knob cross of peace and i get a lot of question about how did Alto pass get its name… its says at one time it was called Quetil was it our do you know how and when did it get its new name Alto pass.. Thank Roger w. Gibson.. P.s. i look every were on the computer all i can get is the wine story and i dont want that … thanks…

@ Theresa – Thanks for the comment. I should have indicated that it was from about mid-October 2010 just as the sun was setting. The photos were taken back in 2001. I searched frantically for two today to find adequate photos. Round Bluff is a lung-buster in some parts, but a nice add on. Thanks again for taking the time to comment.

The tree colors are beautiful in the video. Was it filmed this year or in a previous year? I didn’t think the trees had changed colors that much this year, yet. I haven’t walked this trail yet but I did walk the Round Bluff Trail. While it is a great trail, one should be warned of the steps which are hard on bad knees. Thanks for your postings.

@ Andy C – Thanks for the comment. I, also, can remember as a kid going to the canyon bottoms (slipping several times along the way) thinking it was the coolest place on earth. It is definitely a gem of Southern Illinois.

Nice video, really captures the feel of the place. My parents first took me hiking there as a kid, and I’ve been back numerous times. It never gets old, an amazing place.

Thanks, Theresa. I, also, have lived in Southern Illinois all my life and still feel fortunate to live in such an intimate and beautiful place. It was not until I was about 25 yrs old that I begun discovering these areas. I hope you get to experience more of our own backyard. Thank you for the comment on the video and your kind words.

I really enjoy your pictures and articles. I’ve lived in So. IL all my life and have heard of many of its natural wonders but never saw them and never knew how to find them. In particular, on this posting, I loved the video.

Good Point Rodger. There was someone pressing the record button that day. I absolutely agree that going hiking alone adds an additional risk that is not worth it, in most instances, especially at Little Grand Canyon. Thanks for the comment and contributing.

Gary, One thing that you have mentioned before and I know should definitely be mentioned here is that even though you are alone in the video,This area should not be traversed alone!! I couldn’t help but notice that the trails are marked but an unexperienced hiker would have trouble finding the trail markers on the trees.You are doing everyone a great service by educating everyone about the dangers of this area and we hope everyone will heed your advice. I’m not trying to discourage anyone from visiting this area because it is absolutely breathtaking but am simply trying to tell everyone to USE COMMON SENSE and “BE CAREFULL” Once again Gary “Great Job”!!!!!!

@Jerrod – Even after all these years of hiking I am still on the lookout for snakes, but I don’t let them spoil a good time. I’ve personally found that they don’t want to have anything to do with us.

All the snakes I’ve encountered just wanted me to get away and when I gave them the distance and respect they deserve we both walked (or slithered away lol) with out any negative consequences.
