The Trail of Tears State Forest is one of five state forests in Illinois. Located just south of Alto Pass, this 5,000 acres is dedicated to research, timber, and outdoor enjoyment.
The state forest received its name from the forced march of Native Americans across the area just south of the forest boundary.
The Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930’s left its mark on the area from the stone-lined creeks to the wooden shelters that are scattered throughout the recreational areas.
